EU4Sevan+ Program Leaders Meet with Water Committee

January 14, 2026

Chairman of the Water Committee Aramazd Ghalamkaryan received the leadership of the GIZ-implemented ''Efficient Management of Water Resources for Sustainable Community Development in Armenia'' (EU4Sevan+) programme. The delegation included Programme Manager Nils Thews, Programme Adviser Edgar Pirumyan, and Olga Weigel, Head of the environmental component.

The primary objective of the three-year EU4Sevan+ grant programme is to enhance the protection of Lake Sevan—Armenia’s largest freshwater resource—and its surrounding environment. This new phase builds upon the foundational experience and successes of the preceding EU4Sevan programme (2020–2025).

During the meeting, the parties discussed the programme's four strategic components and the specific implementation steps required. A mutual agreement was reached to establish a multi-agency Coordinating Council to ensure streamlined governance. Particular emphasis was placed on wastewater treatment solutions and community engagement initiatives, including prospective decentralized cooperation with German municipalities.

Armenia currently faces significant challenges in establishing a robust system for water resource and wastewater management. The EU4Sevan+ programme is designed to harmonize the ecological requirements of Lake Sevan with the water security needs of adjacent river basins, ensuring the optimal allocation of water resources among all beneficiaries.
