October 28, 2025
Aramazd Ghalamkaryan, Chairman of the Water Committee, and Deputy Chairman Martiros Nalbandyan conducted a working visit to Shirak, Aragatsotn, and Armavir regions.
The primary objective of the visit was to conduct an on-site review of the technical condition, operational processes, and existing challenges of the Akhuryan and Araks rivers, as well as several current and future reservoirs and canals.
In Shirak region, Mr. Ghalamkaryan and Mr. Nalbandyan visited the Akhuryan Reservoir. Accompanied by armenian officials from the Armenian-Turkish Permanent Commission for Reservoir Operation, they toured the facility to discuss current issues and potential solutions within the framework of available funding.
Along the banks of the Akhuryan River, officials observed the riverbed, a currently decommissioned canal, and specific sections of the coastal zone. Specialists proposed exploring options for the transfer of irrigation water from these areas to other regions of the Republic, as well as modernizing infrastructure and equipment within the Armenian sector of the border zone.
The visit continued to the Aragatsotn region, where Mr. Ghalamkaryan and Mr. Nalbandyan met with Andranik Sapheyan, the Director of the "Talin" Water User Association (WUA), and other officials. Discussions focused on potential strategies for increasing management efficiency, improving fee collection rates, modernizing irrigation networks, and reducing water losses.
In Armavir region, the Committee leadership visited the headworks of the Armavir Main Canal (Sardarapat Hydroscheme), the Araks riverbank area, and the Gharaghala-2 pumping station of the "Shenik" WUA. Key topics of discussion included the targeted allocation of available irrigation water volumes to consumers; more effective application of control mechanisms and continuous monitoring; identification of issues requiring urgent solutions, with established deadlines and assigned responsible parties.
