Advancing Urban Water Management: Insights from Spain & Portugal

Naira Avetyan, Chief Specialist at the Department of Irrigation and Collector-Drainage Systems, recently participated in an immersive training week in Spain and Portugal focused on "Innovative Solutions for Improved Urban Water Management."

The program included

  • Principles of integrated water resource management

  • Legal frameworks for water governance

  • Cross-border cooperation in basin planning (Spain-Portugal case studies)

  • Water use permitting, quality/quantity monitoring, and dam safety protocols

  • Design of modern water systems & automated control centers (using SCADA software with real-time sensors and cameras)

  • EU-standard water purification methods and opportunities for reusing treated water

Specialists from Armenia, Indonesia, Cambodia, India, Nepal, and Uzbekistan participated in the study tour/familiarization visit.
